Layer Manager

Job Summary:
Oversee all functions of the layer barns including but not limited to: ensuring a safe work environment, managing employees, egg delivery to Break Plant and cost center’s financial objectives.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Responsible for ALL aspects of bird (chicken) husbandry
Responsible for overall management of layer barns and husbandry employees
Monitor computer for all house vitals (Feed, light, air, and water)
Responsible for ordering the correct amount and ration of feed, as well as monitoring and adjusting feed intake 
Manage appropriate light duration/intensity for all flocks
Manage and schedule bird crew activities
Accountable for cost center’s financial objectives and reporting
Ordering and maintaining an adequate amount of supplies for daily operations
Report all layer site activity to company management
Manage employee performance, employee meetings and work with human resources, as appropriate
Partner and coordinate with Barn Maintenance Manager on day-to-day operations
Answer and field any alarm calls
Perform all layer house positions when necessary
Ensure that all biosecurity measures are understood and followed
Closely monitor bird health and egg production
Ensure that all the necessary documentation is in place for successful audits/inspections
Ensure that all the necessary samples are taken at the appropriate time (i.e. AI, blood, water)
Establish a culture of inclusiveness and trust that facilitates a positive and collaborative work environment
Utilize Continuous Improvement methodology of problem solving to drive cost savings and long-term solutions

Backup:
A trained designee will be appointed by management to cover for absences or vacancies; refer to Rembrandt Foods site-specific facility back-up matrix on file.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Required:
Experience with Layers
Mathematical Skills: Logical/Analytical, Percentages, Fractions, Moderate Algebra
Computer Skills: Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Internet, Touch Screens (where applicable)
Advanced communication skills (speaking, reading and writing)
Awareness and knowledge of surroundings in relation to climate, atmosphere and equipment
Leadership and team building skills to ensure a productive and cohesive team
Independent Self Starter/Team Player
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions
Poultry Husbandry Skills-Maintaining proper feed, water, climate and living conditions in building
Attention to detail

Preferred:
4-year degree in relevant field
Basic Biology and Physiology
Knowledge of Biosecurity
Public relation skills and phone etiquette
Mechanical, electrical, metal working and plumbing knowledge
Ability to operate power tools and equipment safely

Computer, keyboard, mouse, printer, etc.
Handheld radios

Adheres to work schedules in completing and performing assigned tasks
Takes appropriate action to ensure the integrity and sustained certification of the SQF system.
Responsible for reporting and taking any necessary action to prevent food safety and food quality problems from occurring
Responsible for following and enforcing procedures outlined in the Food Safety Plan and the Food Quality Plan and any other programs that support the SQF system and other 3rd party audits
Performs other tasks as assigned
