Director of Engineering and Maintenance

Job Summary:


The Director of Engineering/Maintenance manages supports and provides direction and leadership to the engineering team, maintenance team, and projects.  They provide technical support for safety initiatives and manage processes using Key Performance Indicators to ensure productivity goals are consistently achieved.  This position requires 10 years of experience and a history of strong leadership, deep practical engineering knowledge and a proven track record for timely project delivery, project management, cost control, and customer satisfaction.  The individual in this position works effectively in a team environment and interfaces closely with Finance, Sales, R&D and Operations. The Director of Engineering/Maintenance brings knowledge and creativity to the position and must have the discipline to drive results and follow established fundamental processes.


Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Manages monthly and yearly capital and maintenance budgets to ensure cost controls; implements KPIs to track internal measurements

  • Coordinates and directs projects, making detailed plans to accomplish goals and directs the integration of technical activities

  • Develops and implements policies, standards and procedures for engineering and technical work performed in the department

  • Plans and schedules facility modifications, construction and installations, monitors progress against project schedules and budgets, secures cost estimates and select contractors and vendors for projects,   recommends allocation of resources to accomplish goals

  • Analyzes technology, resource needs, and market demand, to plan and assess the feasibility of projects

  • Provides engineering studies, designs and justifications for approval to support Operations goals;  Directs the management of projects within budget, delivering targeted return on investments

  • Supports working cross functionally with other departments including the USDA to ensure clear communication and proper processes are in place

  • Consults or negotiates with contractors/vendors to prepare project specifications;  Recommends or approves contracts and cost estimates

  • Keeps current in discipline, assesses new technologies and ideas, develops, evaluates and seeks approval for new concepts or equipment to improve the efficiency and the capability of plant processes

  • Completes jobsite visits as required to evaluate site conditions and other items that will impact system design and constructability


  • Leads Plant Maintenance Managers to train, direct, develop, supervise and evaluate maintenance teams manufacturing to increase productivity and improve manufacturing costs in a 24/7 operations environment

  • Systematically defines, designs, develops, monitors and refines the preventive, predictive and reliability-centered maintenance processes in pursuit of optimization

  • Reduces and improves maintenance work wherever feasible ensuring efficient and reliable plant operations, processes and equipment while protecting and prolonging the economic life of plant assets at optimal cost

  • Develops best practices around documentation of maintenance work and equipment; track performance data and identify equipment and procedural improvement opportunities

  • Applies value analysis to repair/replace, repair/redesign, and make/buy decisions;  manages monthly/yearly budgets to ensure cost controls; implements KPI’s to track internal measurements

  • Develops standardized programs that influence the selection of materials, equipment and spare parts

  • Ensures each facility conducts emergency system inspections, including sprinkler system, ammonia systems, and maintain appropriate records

  • Ensures safety programs for the department, including but not limited to lock out/tag out, confined space entry, PSM/PHA, MSDS for material used in maintenance activities, and safety meetings; ensures safety compliance and conducts accident investigations

  • Maintains historical data, analyzes and monitors key equipment efficiencies and parameters against design

  • Assists operations with troubleshooting and suggests measures for improvement of manufacturing to increase productivity and improve manufacturing costs



  • A trained designee will be appointed by management to cover for absences or vacancies; refer to Rembrandt Foods site-specific facility back-up matrix on file.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:



  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering
  • 5+  years’ management experience
  • Septic packaging experience
  • HAACP/ SQF Knowledge and Experience
  • Extensive background in managing projects
  • Hands on experience with implementing world class TPM programs
  • Strong interpersonal, communication and organizational skills
  • Independent  Self Starter/Team Player
  • Ability to motivate, lead, problem solve
  • Responsible to travel between plants - approximately 30%



  • 10+ years’ experience working in Food Industry
  • MBA
  • Dryer, Pasteurizer and Pre-cooked experience preferred
  • Bilingual - Spanish
